Lara van Ruijven, the world champion in short track speed skater, died at the age of 27.
Lara van Ruijven, the Netherlands’ world champion short track speed skater, died Friday as a result of symptoms from an autoimmune illness, according to a division of the Dutch Olympic Committee and the Dutch skating association. She was 27 years old.
Van Ruijven was hospitalized on June 25 after becoming ill during a training camp in the French Pyrenees. She had been in a coma in an intensive care unit since June 29. According to Dutch press reports, she suffered an internal hemorrhage, including in her brain, and required many surgeries.

“It’s inconceivable that she was snatched from us in her prime,” Dutch skating director Herman de Haan said in a statement, according to an Associated Press translation.
Van Ruijven is the current world champion in the 500m. She won bronze in the 3000m relay at the PyeongChang Olympics.

Van Ruijven led the 500m virtually from start to finish at the 2019 Worlds. Martina Valcepina, an Italian, caught up to her and made contact with van Ruijven as they crossed the finish line. Van Ruijven stumbled as Valcepina outleaned her by half a skate blade. Valentina was disqualified two minutes later after a video review for an arm block.
Van Ruijven made history by being the first Dutch woman to win a world short track title not counting the 3000m super final.
